Universe W-2020: Apex MERCs 7
July 4th, 2013
Go Ahead Violet
The sound of a helicopter propeller tearing mercilessly through the lower atmosphere booms overhead, then gradually decreases in pace until the blades collide with an occupied building. The body of the craft, a smoldering wreckage even before it’s crashed to the ground, crashes to the ground with a thunderous clap.
Mom and Dad will not be pleased.
So she has two options, our little escapee; squat in one of the undeveloped suburban model homes for an inestimable amount of time until she’s finally tracked down, hunted, captured, beaten, and experimented on to even further of a disrespectful degree, or she can finally cross that line her folks Mister and Missus Illuminati have been daring her to cross ever since they adopted her: leave the city. Abandon her lovely adopted parents and wander alone across the globe, a literal living weapon all by her lonesome. See how long she lasts before she’s snatched up by a cabal of degenerates who won’t be decent enough to say I love you before putting her under to vivisect her nervous system and examine what they’ve done to it.
“Go ahead Violet,” they said with smiles on their rosy faces, “see what happens.”
Well, Violet saw what happened.
What happened was a psychotic manhunt that left many tens of innocent humans dead, maimed, or otherwise; a truly wild chase of the goose which left Violet feeling more mentally and physically exhausted than she’s felt in a long, long time.
But she can’t go back. There’s no back to go to.
She needs to phase through the wall.
And isn’t it lucky, and purely coincidental, that a pod of friendly dolphins are doing flips near the island when she falls out of the other side of that very wall, because converting one’s entire body to kinetic ultraviolet light and then scattering that light body into a swarm of ultraviolet radiation particles small enough to slip through the very limited empty space between the atoms of a titanium wall takes up quite a bit of energy, as you can imagine, especially after you’ve just got finished single-handedly destroying an entire fleet of armed to the props helistalkers.
Yes, especially in that situation.
And isn’t it so curious how fortunate events tend to occur in succession, in a chain and like a chain, like the chain in the motor of Gary’s trusty gravity bike, the mastery of which makes him not only unique, but also a prime candidate for the Apex MERC program – why bother doing experiments on your soldiers if you can find them pre-augmented? In Gary’s case, he was pre-augmented at birth with extreme suggestibility – the gravity bike was Doctor Torpol’s idea, but getting Gary to return his signing bonus to Apex without the fool ever even realizing he’d done it? That’s a sum greater than its parts.
Likewise is the meeting of the kind dolphin pod and the escaped Violet; while Violet was escaping imprisonment inside the glass of a test tube, the dolphins were escaping imprisonment inside the glass of an aquarium tank, and their retreats brought them together like peanut butter and jelly. The dolphins got away clean, Violet got a nice clean darkroom to develop herself in, and the Apex Corporation got their second test subject for the MERC program.
In the case of the first test subject, the true guinea pig of the super soldier training regimen, the Gary, the MERC program took a useless, futureless, feeble man and made him into something he never would have otherwise become: a mechanical wizard, and in the future, the beta model of the cybernetic supersoldier template that would be used as security in a certain underground facility in northern New Jersey following the events of the year 2020. Between then and now, in addition to the girl with the mutated nervous system capable of projecting and manipulating kinetic ultraviolet light and radiation, the Apex Corporation will receive a boy who was raised by pigs into a man with the ability to telepathically speak to animals, a woman from an alternate universe with the uncanny ability to kill anyone with anything anytime, a retired pornstar with black market bulk-out implants she received in a snuff film early on in her career, and two boys with the uncanny ability to learn everything Rose knows about swords and guns, respectively.
Following the events of the first half of the year 2020, all their individual lives and potentials will’ve been irreversibly squandered and wasted.
Because that’s what the Sean Hymarc’s Apex Corporation does: it abducts worthwhile humans and puts them through the one system that’s proven capable time and time again of breaking any man, hu- or otherwise: being handled by Doctor Edvard Torpol.
Just ask Byron.
Hello Commons, this has been the seventh story from the fifth chapter of The 2020 Event |The Sideshows|, a satirical short story anthology about Existence and the universes that float within it. |The Sideshows| is the final book of the First Spiral, a longer story called The Highest One Writing.
The Highest One Writing is a story about an author told through the books he wrote. It starts with a self-help book and ends with the destruction of Existence. Also, it may or may not take you to the depths of insanity and back.
|The Sideshows| is available to read for free in its entirety on my website. Click here to check it out.
I’ve written a few other books, too. Click here to see the list.
If you like |The Sideshows| and would like to help support my work, click here and buy an autographed copy (or anything else!) from my store. Alternatively, you can snag a cheaper (and unsigned) copy from Amazon by clicking here, OR you can buy the ebook for even cheaper here.
If you’re there, hypothetical reader, thank you for being there. Be well Commons~
