The Goddamn Story

Feeling beat from all this running around he’s doing, Sylvester decides to sit one on the bank of Shit’s Creek, the river running through the wilderness on the untamed side of Atacama Lake. He peels off his soggy socks and dips his feet into the refreshing water. Peace finds him, whispers in his ear, convinces him to lie back and soak in all the nature. Bliss.
Then, his cellular goes off and he sits right back up.
“You almost back, ‘Vester?”
“I’m movin’ just as quick as I can, Cletus,” Sylvester says as Shit’s Creek’s trooper of a current flushes the noxious gunk out from in between his toes. “I’m ‘bout’a hit the river, I think. I hear it flowin’ in the distance.”
“A’ight, well hurry. My uncle came through with the intel, the parcel’s on its way.”
“Hell yeah! That Knox son of a bitch is a dead fuck walkin’!”
Sylvester startles all but one member of a flock of various birds from a nearby tree with all his shouting.
“You better not open it wit’out me, boi.”
“Then you better get here before the courier do,” Cletus claps back. “Just hurry up, I want to move on this as quick as we can. It ain’t gonna be easy.”
“Yeah, yeah…” He sounds distracted. “What the hell…?”
“What the hell what? ”
“This bird,” says ‘Vester, squinting at the bird. “It’s gawkin’ at me funny.”
“Oh fuck the bird, ‘Vester, we got shit to do!”
“You’re right, you’re right.”
Sylvester takes his feet from the river and shakes them not undry, keeping his eyes on the queer bird all the while.
“We got enough butter to make some toast, you think?”
“Butter for toast? What are you fuckin’… oh. Yeah, I think so. Haven’t uh, haven’t made toast in a good long while, though. Not sure if the toaster still works.”
Sylvester resoaks his socks with his feet, puts on his shoes. That damned bird’s still up there gawkin’ at him with its beady little black eyes.
“I got a hankerin’ is all. Just throw a slice in for me, a’ight? I’ll hit the button when I get there.”
“Sure, ‘Vester. Sure. I’ll see you when I see you.”
He waits for the bird to move, blink, do something. It don’t.
“See you then.”
The call ends. Sylvester walks backwards along the shore of Shit’s Creek towards the jumpover point, keeping his eyes on the bird. The bird does the same without leaving its branch.
