Oct the Sixth – Untitled Bigfoot Project (111/224)

Oct the Sixth

Okay, I’m breaking the biggest rule there is to novelwriting: I’m stopping in the middle of a subchapter.

Well, it’s not the middle. I got through the first three subcs of chapter Saturday (a day of Death, and what a day it is, though the chapter takes place entirely at night) and it hit me that, the way I set it up, I wouldn’t be able to include the line “Gobon fled into the endless wood, and Albey the Mad Poet followed.”

So, the fourth subchapter is going to start with that line. I don’t know how I’m going to make it fit into the story, but god damnit I know that I’m going to do it. The line is too clean, the homage to Sai King too beautiful not to put in. SO, I put it in, and when I pick back up tomorrow, I’m going to figure out how to make it work. Worst case scenario I’ll just make it a dream sequence or something (not literally a dream though. Actually, not a “dream” at all – in writing this entry an idea has popped into my head, and I’m going to let it mature overnight. Heheheheheh. I am novelwriter, hear me roar), I’m sure I’ll figure it out.

…                                     …                                    …

Anywho, back to real life, I’m go’n’a go to the library and bug my girlfriend and try to get her to make out with me between the shelves when nobody’s looking. Last time it happened she tricked me into it, so I figure I owe her a little payback.

*rubs hands together greedily*

Oh, and also, I wound up not writing yesterday. I don’t know why, it just didn’t feel right. I want to enjoy this, y’know? It’s my first book, I’m only going to get one of these, and I don’t want the memory of writing it to be miserable. It worked out for the better, anyway: I got almost 4,000 words done in three hours today, that’s a new record for me. It’s almost like I let it build up and it exploded out of me; probably not going to do that again if I can help it, for Balance is key, but it’s good to know that if I miss a day I won’t have to start back at square one and have no idea what to write.

Writing fiction is a very strange experience, not really like anything else I’ve done. It honest to god feels like this idea exists outside of my mind and I’m just a translator. I’ve probably written that a trillion times in here already, but like… that’s how it feels. Fuck it, this is my journal, nobody’s going to read it. I’m not even going to read it. I can write anything I want.

…                                     …                                    …

Tori’s boobs are softer than kittens with down feathers for fur. Taste better, too. Her nipples are like Hershey’s kisses except not brown. And they’re sweeter, too. Sweeter than sugar itself. And she likes when I bite them, mayhap even more than I like biting them.

Okay I got’a get to the library bye.

…                                     …                                    …

Say thankya, Journal. ‘Preciate ya. Long days and pleasant nights~

Oct the Fifth – Untitled Bigfoot Project (109/224)

Oct the Fifth

I haven’t started writing yet, but I just wanted to make this entry for myself in hopes that I might deal with an anxiety that’s been haunting me.

So, by definition, an Exordium is “the beginning or introductory part, especially of a discourse or treatise.” That’s basically the same thing as a prologue and a prelude and yadda yadda yadda. For some reason, in my mind, when I think of “prologue” (because that’s really what The Lodge is, “Exordium” is just a fancy word I chose because of the whole fantasy vibe of The Face of Fear, which I swear to you, Journal, is a real book, not some ridiculous delusion I’m living) I think of “short.” Like, for whatever reason, in my mind a prologue is supposed to be shorter than all the other parts of a book, like, drastically shorter, like, if the mean chapter length is 4,200 words, then the prologue should be around 1,500, 2k max.

But that doesn’t mean it’s true. It doesn’t have to be shorter than the rest, and in my case it isn’t. Well, technically it is, by like 500 or whatever words, but it really doesn’t have to be. It doesn’t have to be anything; writing is anarchy, there are no rules (there are what lots of folks think of as rules but are actually just guidelines for the more hopeless because as long as your communication is communicating the message you want to get across then you’re doing it right, fucking fight me, I’ll clap you over the head with my fuckin’ novel, why am I so angry all of the sudden?), and it’s going to be what it’s going to be. The story will be told in the way it’s meant to be told because, like Stephen King said in not so many words, stories are not constructs of the human mind, they’re living things, they’re like artifacts we dig up, findings to be found, encoded messages from somewhere else entirely that we translate so they may be shared with whoever they’re meant to be shared with, and then some. And that’s just what it is. And that’s okay.

…                                     …                                    …

All right, I feel a little better. I’m just afraid that I’m doing this wrong, is all. Like, I know that I’m not, I’m super passionate and I care a lot about it (so much so that I’m afraid of fucking it up like I did with college), it’s just really important to me is all.

But I do feel better now, having put all that into words. Now I’m off to put more stuff into words, for I feel the dam swelling; the story wishes to flow.

…                                     …                                    …

Oct the Fourth – Untitled Bigfoot Project (107/224)

Oct the Fourth

Journal, I’ve been at this for almost six and a half hours. I’ve written over 5,000 words today and I have 1 subchapter left of chapter Research, and I’m about to fuckin’ do it. It’s so good, so fuckin’ good, AH! At first I was a little meh about it, because I noticed I kept starting a lot of sentences with the same words and that annoys the living daylights out of me for some reason. I’ve never once noticed that in any of the books I’ve read (not that I’ve been looking for it) but now that it’s stood out to me in my own writing it absolutely infuriates me and I needed to take a breather and say this and AHH!

I wrote so much today, I can’t believe I’m still not done. I don’t think I’ve ever worked harder on something in my life. At first I was – and I still kind of am, to be honest – sure that my novel will end up being a novella, as in a short novel. According to the folks on the internet who classify such things, a novella is anywhere between, like, 20,000ish words and 40,000-50,000ish words, and a novel is 40,000-50,000ish words up into infinity, I guess. I’m going to approach the 30,000 mark today (if I don’t surpass it, which I might, depending on how long this palaver’s about to be, and I’m only on chapter 4 out of 9 (including the Exordium and Envoi, of course, and speaking of fancy words, I figured out a word for the appendix that isn’t “appendix”: Addendum. What’s fuckin’ with DAT?! OH, and by the way, I decided that I’m going to add in that little short story I mentioned a long while ago that I remember perfectly because I’ve been looking at it like every day but I still feel the need to mention because I’m writing a novel and I’m in storytelling mode and wow this is a long tangent I wonder how long it’s going to go on for until it breaks anyway so YEAH, I’m going to add it to the back of the book not because it’s connected to The Face of Fear or anything, not because it’s objectively good (although I like it quite a bit), but just because. This is my first novel, the first of many if ka spins in my favor, and assuming I’m going to get readers, I’d like to give them a little something extra. Like, it’s one thing to write a book, but it’s another thing to put something special at the end of said book. I think it is, at least, but what do I know? I’m just a hillbilly kid from the backwoods of New Jersey, my own townfolks don’t even like me) and I forget where I was before the tangent.

Right, so I’m on chapter 4 out of 9 and I’m about to breach 30,000 words, so like, as long as the next five chapters aren’t less than 2,000 words each (like, bitch, I’ve written subchapters longer than that; hell, I’ve written fuckin’ journal entries longer than that!) then I should be fine, it should be a proper novel and not a wimpy little novella.

I am so excited to give this to the world. I’m not in a rush to get it done, because I’m really enjoying myself, but I know the final product is going to be really special, if not to everybody than just to me. And Keaton and Carl, of course, because it’s The Hillside Commons. Ugh. So happy that I’m doing this. So, so very happy.

Oct the Third – Untitled Bigfoot Project (105/224)

Oct the Third

Four hours, 3,500 words. Fuckin’ killin’ ‘em.

Albey’s going on a little expedition, Journal, to see what might be lurking in the forest outside the little island he’s found himself stranded on. He’s not really stranded, of course, as the island is… islanded, I guess, by a river that flows in a circle, but he feels plenty stranded. I’m trying to channel how I felt when I first moved back to Logger’s Pond into Albey’s “living alone in the woods” experience, and I think I’m doing pretty well. Of course I would think that, considering how I’m writing the book, but still. I should be enjoying it. If I thought my work was trash then I wouldn’t want to keep doing it.

That’s not to say I’m intentionally misleading myself, of course, but… y’know. Love your work and it won’t be work, it’ll just be life. Speaking of life, I have one to go live now that my writing for the day is done. Don’t worry, I’ll tell Tori you said hi. And Jason, and Denny, and that old croon who sometimes (but so, so very rarely) works in the library at the same time as Tori, too. Not Harry though, but not out of animosity. Dude’s been mighty avoidant lately. I’m trying to not let it hurt my fragile feelings.

Trying and succeeding, ‘cause Harry’s a punk-ass busta’, and that’s just what it is.

…                                     …                                    …

Short day today, only put three hours into the novel BUT that’s fine, that’s great, even, because chapter 2 is DONE. Well, like, it’s drafted. Roughly drafted, but it’s there. And I’m loving where it’s at.

I will not say much, Journal, but I will tell you this: Iuqon and Ram’rl found their way into the story. And that’s all I’m going to tell you.
